There is a significant difference between ordinary paper and thermal paper. While ordinary paper doesn’t have any coating that has an impact on the process of printing, in the case of thermal paper the process of printing changes significantly. The ATM receipt thermal paper rolls from which the ATM dispenses the transaction receipt, is printed with the application of heat transfer unlike the ink impression that prints on ordinary paper using impact printers. Thermal paper has a chemical coating that enables printing with heat application.

There are different types of ATMs in operation but when it comes to the use of paper for printing out transaction receipts, they all use thermal paper. The banks that own the ATMs, often want specific brand communication messages and graphics to be printed on the back of the receipts. For this, they need special thermal coating to help printing on both sides of the paper. The other option is of course to go for pre-printed thermal paper carrying the brand communication on the back of the receipt.
